Pueblo, Colorado is the ninth-largest city in the state. Third behind Denver and Colorado Springs. It's what you pass on I-25 when you're driving between places people actually want to go. The motto is 'A City Of Excellence.' Not 'The City Of Excellence.' A city. One of many. Technically correct.
Las Vegas locals don't call it a city. They call it a town. A choice that sounds modest until you realize what they're actually saying: This isn't a place. It's a situation. The gap between what Las Vegas sells and what it actually is might be the widest of any city in America.
Austin told itself to "Keep Austin Weird" for twenty years. Then it spent those twenty years methodically eliminating everything that justified the slogan. The city isn't weird anymore. It's good. Consistently, expensively good. Like everywhere else that used to be something and decided to be successful instead.
Tallahassee calls itself the capital of Florida. The locals call it "Talla-nasty," which tells you more than the tourism board ever will. Three identities fighting for one address—and nobody's winning.
